Greetings!
UM ARMY is a ecumenical organization that has been bringing Youth service mission
trips each summer in Texas for the past 22 years. We are currently planning a
weeklong service project in the Beeville area from July 8th to 12th. Approximately
100 high school and college age youth and adult sponsors from the Houston and East
Texas region to work in Bee County during that week. Each volunteer has personally
contributed $1 50 to pay for materials, food; and work supplies just for the
privilege of coming to your community to Christ's servants. The UM ARMY camp will be
hosted and headquartered at Beeville United Methodist Church during the week.
Our service consists of home repairs for clients such as elderly, disabled, or
impoverished community members. We do a variety of tasks including painting, roofing,
light carpentry such as building wheelchair ramps, repairing walls, doors, screens,
porches, etc.; also yard work and cleanup tasks. UM ARMY is not equipped to do
plumbing or electrical work. Our past history shows that we should be able to
complete about 50 projects during this week.
We could use your help in the following ways: first, although we get most of our work
referrals from the Texas Department of Human Services, we are interested in being of
special service to church members in need. Therefore, we ask that you refer to us any
members of your congregation that need this type of assistance. Second, we need
bilingual translation assistance to help some of our clients. We will need several
translators each day during the service project week (July 8-12) and on two Saturdays
in June (8, 22) when we visit referral clients to plan the work to be done later.
Third, we operate on a limited budget from the fee paid by each participant. If your
organization can help by providing meals, material, or a monetary donation, it would
all go to our work. As a non-profit organization, UM ARMY donations are tax
deductible and we will provide written documentation for your tax purposes. Lastly,
we ask for your prayers for this week of service; that all our workers will be safe,
that many people may be helped, and that our UM ARMY volunteers may grow in spiritual
ways.
If you can help with referrals or translators, please contact Mrs. Donna Stewart at
the Department of Human Services in Beeville; 361-358-9790 extension 133. If you can
help with donations, please contact Mr. Joe Boyd at Beeville United Methodist Church,
361-358-3350.
Again, we ask for your prayers as we plan to come in service to your community.
Thank you and God Bless!
