James A. Crabbe, USN Captain Crabbe was raised on Long Island and graduated from Northport High School in 1975. He attended the Naval Academy Prep School in Newport, R.I. prior to entering the Naval Academy in July 1976. Graduating in May 1980 with a B.S. in Physics, he was commissioned a 2ND LT in the Marine Corps. After graduating from The Basic School (TBS) at Quantico, VA in April of 1981, he began flight school in Pensacola, FL. On February 18, 1983 he earned his wings at NAS Beeville, TX and proceeded to VMO-1 to fly OV-10 Broncos at MCAS New River, NC. In February of 1985 he returned to Beeville as an instructor with VT-25 flying the TA-4J. In 1987 he executed an inter-service transfer to the Navy and in 1988 he departed Beeville for VA-128, the A-6 Intruder FRS at NAS Whidbey Island, WA. His tours in A-6’s included VA-196 (USS CONSTELLATION (CV 64) and USS INDEPENDENCE (CV 62), VA-115 (forward deployed with CVW-5 embarked in USS INDEPENDENCE (CV 62), at Atsugi Japan) and, CVW-14 embarked in USS CARL VINSON (CVN 70) as the Operations Officer where he also flew the F-14D Tomcat. Following these sea tours Captain Crabbe attended the Naval War College in Newport, RI. After graduation in 1997, he participated in the CNO Strategic Studies Group as an Associate Fellow. His next tour was at the Pentagon on the Joint Staff working at the National Military Command Center. In October 1999 Captain Crabbe reported as Executive Officer to VT-21 at NAS Kingsville, TX. In September 2000 he assumed Command of VT-21. During his tour with VT-21 he flew the T-45A. In December 2001 he reported to USS JOHN F. KENNEDY (CV 67) for duty in Air Department as Mini Boss and then Air Boss. He completed his tour with USS JOHN F. KENNEDY in May 2004. Captain Crabbe has flown over 3,500 hours, has more than 500 arrested landings and has made five deployments. He flew in Operation Desert Shield and Operation Southern Watch, and ensured the safe launch and recovery of over 15,000 aircraft during Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. His personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal and Air Medal with Bronze”1”, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Expert Rifle, Expert Pistol and various service medals and awards. He is married to the former Eleanor Kusche of Northport, New York and they have three children, Patty, Vicky and Jimmy II. |
